St. Veronica SCC
About St. Veronica
Saint Veronica is a legendary figure in Christian tradition, and her story is most famously connected to
the Sixth Station of the Cross, where she is said to have wiped the face of Jesus Christ on His way to Calvary. While the details of her life are not definitively known, her story has been a source of devotion
for centuries.
Origin of the Legend
- The Passion of Christ: According to Christian tradition, Veronica was a woman of Jerusalem who, moved by compassion, stepped forward to offer Jesus a cloth to wipe His face while He was carrying the cross on the way to His crucifixion. This moment is commemorated in the Stations of the Cross, particularly Station VI, where Veronica is depicted offering Jesus a cloth, and in gratitude, His image is said to have been miraculously imprinted upon it.
- The Sudarium (Veil of Veronica): The cloth that Veronica used to wipe Jesus’ face is traditionally known as the Veronica’s Veil or Sudarium. The legend holds that after Jesus used the cloth, His image was left imprinted on it, which became a powerful relic. The Veil is said to have been kept in Rome, where it was venerated, though the authenticity of the relic has been a subject of debate for centuries.
Celebrating the Saint:
- Feast Day: Saint Veronica’s feast day is celebrated on July 12 in the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.
- Devotion: Veronica is often depicted in Christian art as a woman holding the cloth with the image of Christ’s face on it. Her act of kindness is a symbol of compassion and courage, and she is sometimes invoked by those suffering or in need of comfort.
The legacy of Saint Veronica has endured as a powerful symbol of faith, charity, and the compassion
of Christ.
