About St. Anthony of Padua
St. Anthony of Padua, born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, was a Franciscan priest and a brilliant preacher whose deep theological knowledge earned him the nickname “Doctor of the Church.” Originally, he joined the Augustinian Order, but after witnessing the martyrdom of five Franciscans in Morocco, he was inspired to become a Franciscan himself. His aim was to spread
the Gospel, and his talents soon became evident in Italy, where he was invited to teach theology and moved countless people with his powerful sermons.
St. Anthony is celebrated for many miracles attributed to his intercession. One famous account describes how his prayers revived a young child who had drowned near Padua, leaving witnesses amazed. Another well-known story, the Miracle of the Fish, recounts how he preached to fish after skeptical townspeople refused to listen. Miraculously, the fish appeared to gather and “listen” attentively, which led to the townspeople’s conversion. He was also credited with bilocating, appearing
in two places simultaneously to assist a family in need, and he saved a poisoned child by blessing the boy’s drink, showcasing both his compassion and miraculous gifts.
St. Anthony died on June 13, 1231, in Arcella, Italy, at the age of 36. His impact was so profound that Pope Gregory IX canonized him only a year later. In 1946, he was declared a Doctor of the Church due to his theological insight and devotion. St. Anthony’s feast day is celebrated on June 13, and he remains a beloved saint, widely invoked for finding lost items and for his powerful intercession in times of need.
