ST. GABRIEL & ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

messenger of God. Gabriel is one of the archangels and is primarily revered as the messenger who
delivers important divine announcements.

- The Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38): Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary to announce that she will conceive Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
- Announcement to Zechariah (Luke 1:11-20): Gabriel informs Zechariah that his wife, Elizabeth, will bear a son, John the Baptist.
Symbols: Gabriel is often associated with a lily (symbolizing purity), a scroll (representing divine
messages), and a trumpet (symbolizing divine proclamation).

Meaning of His Name:
The name “Gabriel” means “God is my strength” or “Hero of God“, reflecting his role as a divine
messenger and enforcer of God’s will.
St. Gabriel symbolizes the beauty of divine communication, purity, and the fulfillment of God’s promises. His role as a bringer of good news makes him a beloved figure across many faiths.
St. Francis of Assisi (1181/1182–1226) is one of the most beloved saints in Christianity, known for his
humility, devotion to Christ, and deep love for nature and all living things.
Birth and Early Life:
- Born in Assisi, Italy, as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone. His father was a wealthy cloth merchant, and he was nicknamed “Francesco” (the Frenchman) due to his family’s love for French culture.
- As a young man, Francis lived a carefree life of luxury and enjoyed socializing, but he was deeply changed after being a soldier and experiencing imprisonment and illness.
Conversion:
- He had a profound spiritual transformation after hearing God’s call to “rebuild my Church” while praying before a dilapidated church in San Damiano.
- He renounced his wealth and family ties, embracing poverty and dedicating his life to Christ.
Foundation of the Franciscan Order:
- Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans), emphasizing a life of simplicity, humility, poverty, and service.
- He later established the Poor Clares, a women’s religious order, and the Third Order of St. Francis for laypeople.

Love for Nature:
- St. Francis is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment. He saw all of creation as a reflection of God’s glory.
- He wrote the famous Canticle of the Sun, praising God through the elements of nature.

- In 1224, Francis is said to have received the stigmata, marks resembling the wounds of Christ’s crucifixion, a testament to his deep identification with Christ’s suffering.
